How do you test a half-drop or half-brick repeat correctly?
Test the exact offset used by the design: half-drop shifts alternating columns vertically, while half-brick shifts alternating rows horizontally.
Identify which axis is offset
In a half-brick layout, every second row moves horizontally by half the repeat width. In a half-drop layout, every second column moves vertically by half the repeat height. The names describe the visual staggering, but software menus are not perfectly consistent, so verify the preview rather than trusting a label.
Some delivered files already contain a composite rectangle that repeats straight while reproducing an internal half-drop arrangement. Others contain a single motif unit that requires an offset placement rule. Determine which file you have before testing; applying an extra offset to a precomposed tile creates the wrong surface.
Build enough copies to expose the full cycle
A two-by-two preview is often insufficient because an alternating layout returns to its starting phase only after the second row or column. Use at least four repeats in each direction. Inspect the joins around a center tile and every location where four offset neighbors approach one another.
Use exact half values. If the width or height is an odd number of pixels, a half-pixel offset can force resampling in raster software. Prefer an even repeat dimension or build a doubled master unit that permits whole-pixel placement. Otherwise a preview line may come from interpolation rather than the source artwork.
Judge seams and rhythm separately
First inspect close joins for clipped motifs, gaps, and color changes. Then zoom out and look for diagonal chains, obvious zigzags, or crowded bands created by the offset. Offset repetition often hides a simple grid but can introduce a stronger diagonal rhythm.
Switch among Straight, Half-drop and Half-brick in the checker. The modes are layout simulations, not automatic proof that a file was authored for that repeat. The correct mode is the one specified by the designer or production file. Record that mode with the asset so another user does not unknowingly test the wrong geometry.
