Can a seamless pattern tile be rectangular instead of square?
Yes. A repeat tile may be square, wide, or tall. Seamlessness depends on matching opposite edges, not on equal width and height.
Aspect ratio changes rhythm, not validity
A seamless raster tile is a repeat unit with two independent edge relationships: left must meet right, and top must meet bottom. Nothing in that rule requires equal dimensions. A 6000 by 3000 pixel tile can repeat just as reliably as a square tile when both edge pairs are continuous. The rectangular shape simply means horizontal and vertical repeats occur at different intervals.
Wide tiles often suit landscapes, borders, panoramic foliage, and motifs that need room to travel sideways. Tall tiles can produce falling vines, stripes, or elongated architectural rhythms. A square is convenient because many design tools preview it predictably, but convenience is not a technical requirement.
Set scale from the real repeat dimensions
Record both pixel dimensions before placing the file. At 300 pixels per inch, a 6000 by 3000 tile measures 20 by 10 inches. If software forces a square swatch or uses only one scale value, preserve the original aspect ratio so the artwork is not stretched. Distortion can align the outer pixels while making every motif look wrong.
For CSS, game materials, or 3D textures, define both background dimensions rather than assuming one value. For print, ask whether the supplier wants the repeat unit or a larger repeated field. Delivering a square crop from a rectangular master destroys the verified boundary unless the crop itself was rebuilt as a new repeat.
Verify a rectangular tile deliberately
Build at least a three-by-three preview using the exact width and height. Inspect the center copy, since it touches neighbors on every side. Then zoom out and look for channels that reveal the wider or taller cadence. A mathematically clean rectangle can still create a distracting stripe if one motif dominates at the repeat interval.
Use the checker with Straight mode for a conventional tile. The horizontal and vertical scores are reported separately, which matters when the two axes contain different amounts of detail. If only one axis fails, repair that opposite edge pair and retest the unchanged other axis.
