How do you make a seamless pattern from a photograph or texture?
Correct perspective and lighting first, wrap the photograph so edges move into the center, then heal the joins without creating repeated landmarks.
Start with an even, usable source
Choose a photograph taken as square to the surface as possible. Perspective distortion makes one edge contain larger features than its opposite. Correct lens and perspective before cropping the repeat. Even illumination is equally important: a dark left side and bright right side will create a stripe regardless of how well objects align.
Remove large gradients and color casts while protecting useful local texture. Avoid a source dominated by one crack, knot, stone, or stain; that landmark will announce the repeat interval. A slightly larger crop gives more material for blending and reduces the need to duplicate recognizable features.
Offset boundaries into the working area
Use a wraparound offset of half the width and half the height. The original outer edges now meet through the center, exposing vertical and horizontal joins. Heal, clone, or blend those central joins using nearby texture. Do not paint over the new outer boundary, because it already represents the wrapped continuity.
Work with varied sampling sources and avoid obvious mirrored patches. For materials such as wood or fabric, respect the natural direction of grain. Crossing features should continue rather than dissolve abruptly. Periodically repeat the current tile to ensure a repair has not introduced a new visible cluster.
Test material behavior, not only pixels
Inspect a multi-tile field close up for edge discontinuities and farther away for brightness waves or recognizable repeated landmarks. Texture repeats can be mathematically clean yet visually obvious because the same feature appears in a rigid grid. Adjust the interior or select a less distinctive source when necessary.
For 3D use, also test the texture with the intended filtering, mipmaps, and UV scale. For print, create a physical-size proof. Save the corrected tile as the master and derive any normal maps, roughness maps, or color variants from the verified repeat so their boundaries remain synchronized.
